Artist residency at Cott Valley, Cornwall.
I started writing this piece early on this year, before the chaos of moving house overwhelmed me and the joy of a new garden stole all my attention!!
Now we are heading into winter and the work I started in the Cott Valley has progressed into actual pieces of work which I have just loaded up to my webshop. They are the Monolith Granite pieces and I am planning to develop a collection from this starting point.
The new pieces are hammered against granite rocks, as you can see in the middle 3 images. The silver takes on the texture of the stone it’s hammered against so each piece is an imprint of a geological time capsule. I love this idea and that I am outside making the first markings on the silver.
I explored the Granite pieces further while doing another residency in Dartmoor in March 2024. I took a length of copper sheet, cut in a wave shape which I textured against the stones lining the leat at Merrivale. The leats on Dartmoor carried water across the moor for mining and industry and drinking and it seemed a fitting place to forge the metal.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this preview of an emerging collection of work and a glimpse into the process and the time that it takes to develop ideas into tangible pieces of finished jewellery.
