Contemporary chunky gold hoops
Contemporary chunky gold hoops
Handcrafted chunky gold hoops, contemporary Cornish jewellery.
The textured surface is achieved by a process called reticulation, the chunky gold hoops have a lovely weight and catch the light beautify as they are worn. These earrings are great for everyday wear with a touch of understated luxury and a subtle shine as the light catches the textured gold surface. They are made using recycled silver, plated with a beautiful layer of 18ct gold.
Also available in Recycled silver.
Reticulation means heating and ‘pickling’ the sterling silver a number of times until the pure silver has come to the surface. Consequently, the silver starts to melt and run into beautiful forms reminiscent of sand moulded by water on beaches as the tide goes out.
The thickness of gold plating on jewellery is noted in microns and determines how long the gold plating lasts with use. Different thicknesses of plate have different names: gold plate is a thickness greater than 0.5 microns and heavy gold plate or vermeil is a thickness greater than 2.5 microns. For earrings, anything from 1-2 microns of gold plate is the norm. If there are moving parts, 3 micronsiof gold vermeil is applied. For jewellery which takes more wear such as chains, rings and bracelets, 4-6 microns of heavy gold plate or vermeil will make the piece last. The thickness of the gold plate effects the price of the jewellery and you will find that each piece of my jewellery comes with a note describing this.
