Talisman Brooch - Inspired by Seagrass
Talisman Brooch - Inspired by Seagrass
A UNIQUE SILVER BROOCH INSPIRED BY ENDANGERED SEAGRASS SPECIES
This piece is made with the names of our seagrass species etched into the surface and finished with a neon pink monofilament knot collected from Flushing beach. I hand write the words onto the silver before etching to give a raised design which you can feel when you run your finger over the textured surface. The brooch pin is made from sterling silver and the back is lightly filed with delicate lines emulating seagrass.
Seagrass meadows are incredible, they store carbon, they provide unique habitat, they support our fishing industry and one particular type of seagrass is know to breakdown sea plastic!! 'But despite its ability to live almost infinitely, Posidonia (seagrass) is finding the modern world increasingly treacherous. The damage caused by one yacht's anchor in a single day several years ago would take almost 1,000 years to restore.' Project Seagrass.
The Talisman project is about lost words and species on the edge of extinction – wild flowers, birds, kelp forests, sea grass and, of course, lichen. They are Talisman pieces of jewellery to be worn and loved and remind the wearer that nature is important. We are part of nature, not separate from it, and we all need to take more care.
