Talisman Heritage Apple Brooch
Talisman Heritage Apple Brooch
A STATEMENT BROOCH INSPIRED BY RARE APPLE VARIETIES.
This etched silver brooch has a burnt wood and red cotton detail signifying the decline in the heritage apple varieties grown in the UK. The wonderful names of some of these apples are etched into the surface as a way of keeping them in our minds. I hand write the words into the silver before etching to give a textured design which you can feel when you run your finger over the textured surface.
I was inspired to make this brooch when I visited the apple orchards at Trelissick National Trust. They have an orchard planted with heritage Cornish varieties which they aim to use to conserve and increase the biodiversity of the gardens.
The apple is a uniquely diverse family because, left to its own devices, every seed would grow into its own distinctive fruit. We produce around 2200 varieties of apples, enough for a different apple everyday for 6 years according to the National Fruit Collection!! nationalfruitcollection.org.uk
The Talisman project is about lost words and species on the edge of extinction – wild flowers, birds, heritage apples, sea grass and, of course, lichen. They are Talisman pieces of jewellery to be worn and loved and remind the wearer that nature is important. We are part of nature, not separate from it, and we all need to take more care.
